What’s the connection between bread, chaos, and knot theory? Braids! In this talk we will introduce braid groups and explore their connection to the theories of dough and taffy. We will see how to define the entropy of a braid, and how analysis of braid entropy allows you to design the best possible stand mixer. Along the way we will encounter the golden ratio and its numerous cousins, the metallic means. Also, pseudo-Anosov maps will make an appearance, because why not?
